Activities and Lectures

Pick a Peck of Pumpkins!

Looking for an Outdoor Activity for Children this Fall? The Château Ramezay invites young and old to discover the world of squash with Pick a Peck of Pumpkins!, a one-month outdoor exhibition presented free of charge in the Governor’s Garden, from October 3rd to November 8th, 2026.

While the children are off exploring, discover multiple uses for squash by going through the paths in the Governor's Garden. Every year, pumpkins dominate the autumn scenery, sometimes overshadowing humbler members of the squash family, which have many everyday uses. Look for squash not only at mealtimes, but in beauty products and as percussion instruments and decorative items. Cultivated for over 5,000 years, squash are now native to every continent.

Two Activities

The 4 to 7-year-olds will meet Reddy, a friendly little pumpkin, and his numerous cousins. The free activity booklet will send them on a mission to find a mystery word by picking up hints throughout their visit. Cucumbers, zucchinis and patty-pan squash will come together to help the young botanists fulfill their quest. A surprise will await those who succeed!

Through a series of silly questions, the 8 to 12-year-olds will test their knowledge on the cucurbit family! They are sure to be surprised by this unusual theme! It should take your tweens 20-30 minutes to find the “key” that will grant them a surprise from the Château’s welcome desk!

The activity booklet will be available at reception or you may download and print it from our website before your visit.

The Pick a Peck of Pumpkins! exhibition originated at the Musée-conservatoire ethnologique de Haute-Provence, Prieuré de Salagon.

Animation in the Garden

All summer long, enter the garden and immerse yourself in the horticultural world of the 18th century.

On your own, at your own pace and completely free of charge, explore the vegetable garden, the ornamental garden and the orchard.

The Friends of the Garden await you on summer afternoons between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to help you discover our splendid oasis. Can you recognize the medicinal herbs that grow in our garden? Where are the pear trees? And the artichoke plants? They will answer your questions and reveal their favorite historical vegetable garden anecdotes if you have a little time. And for families, they have games and challenges to offer.

The presence of our volunteers varies depending on the weather and their availability, but at all times, enjoy our audio tour in 6 languages and the self-guided tour booklet available in the Garden.

Wanted: Passionate volunteers

Me, a volunteer guide?

Of course! No need to be a historian or bilingual. All you need is to be comfortable with others, enjoy learning, want to share your knowledge with different types of audiences and be available a few hours a week. If you also have an interest in the history of Quebec, of Montreal, then you will be a great recruit! Detailed training is offered. Paired with experienced guides, you will learn the inner workings of our tours and activities and will pick up, at your own pace, the pleasure of guiding.

Take the risk

Becoming a volunteer at the Château also means taking the risk… of making new friends! Volunteer guides are grouped under two associations: French-speaking guides and English-speaking guides. In total, these associations have nearly a hundred members. Each organizes continuing education, outings and various events throughout the year. Some volunteers have been involved at the Château for over 25 years.

I want to learn more about the Château volunteers!
